Sony Ericsson unveils 2008 lineup

Sony Ericsson today gave media journalists a glimpse into its future, well, at least into the first quarter of 2008. And yes, to answer your question, there will be yet more Walkmans and Cyber-shots. Among the three handsets unveiled will be two Walkman phones (W890i and W380i) and one a K-series mobile. The Japanese-Swedish manufacturer also sported a new Bluetooth headset (HBH-PV703) and mobile broadband USB modem (MD300) slated for release early next year.

Of the trio, the W890i drew our eye. With its multitude of onboard features ranging from picture/video blogging and Bluetooth stereo to a 3.2-megapixel camera, it’s possibly the most equipped Walkman phone in the series. Yet for all its feature bigness, it clocks in at a mere 9.9mm in girth and lightweight 78g, making it a worthy successor to the ultra-slim W880i. The W890i also features an enhanced Walkman Player 3.0 and comes bundled with a 2GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card.

The W380i is not without its appeal. Onboard is an interesting feature introduced for the first time on a Walkman phone, the Gesture Control function. Wave your hand in front of the camera and this action mutes the ringtone (or even the vibration) of an incoming call as well as silences the alarm. From the supplied images, it seems the clamshell also has a hidden OLED display on its outer cover, much like the Z610i. Users can access music playback controls with the one-touch buttons on the cover without having to flip open the phone.

According to Sony Ericsson, the final handset, the HSDPA-enabled K660i, is "targeted at young Web-savvy users", thanks to its landscape Web browsing and dedicated shortcut keys for surfing the Net. There’s also Google Maps for Mobile, a 2-megapixel camera and Bluetooth stereo support.

In addition to the three phones, Sony Ericsson announced a new HBH-PV703 Bluetooth heaset with a 10-hour talktime as well as a MD300 USB modem stick that connects the computer to HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE or GPRS networks. The company also unveiled plans to enhance its PlayNow service in the second quarter of 2008.
